Mikkel Kessler to end retirement

At 38 years of age, Danish warrior 46-3 (35 KOs) Mikkel Kessler has decided to return to the ring. He was last seen losing in a spirited effort against Carl Froch just shy of four years ago now. No opponent or date has been named.

Kessler fought Carl Froch even over two excellent fights

A Mikkel Kessler comeback isn’t as alarming as they often are as he never seemed shot. Froch beat him clearly in the rematch, but Mikkel Kessler was game and competitive all the way through. 38 is a concerning age, but there are plenty of intriguing fights out there for him. He never fought Lucian Bute, for example, in a fight where you aren’t risking either against a younger fighter. Arthur Abraham now competes at 168 and that could be a big fight in Europe. He could also try to lure Froch out of retirement with him for a trilogy fight.

Of course there are younger fighters like James Degale, Callum Smith, Gilberto Ramirez, and more, but it is never fun to watch an old, former great fighter be lined up to be a name on younger fighters’ resumes.

Kessler could target Germany’s Tyron Zuege who looks on paper to be a very weak belt holder for the WBA or line something up for the vacant WBC belt that Badou Jack vacated when he announced that he was moving to Light Heavyweight. Both titles previously belonged to Kessler.
