Adonis Stevenson is slowly improving

Superman is conscious and speaking a little.

The tragic story of fallen recent former light heavyweight titleholder Adonis “Superman” Stevenson is thankfully becoming a little less tragic by the day. There is no guarantee of a perfectly happy ending, but every step of the way has essentially gone how we’d realistically want it to if the initial injury had to be suffered.

A brief recap: Stevenson was knocked out by Oleksandr Gvozdyk in the eleventh round of their December 1st fight. He was not taking an abnormal beating and in fact had hurt Gvozdyk himself the round before. Adonis did take a little longer than normal to recover, but he got to his feet and made it to the dressing room. There he talked to his promoter and family about the loss and was cleared by the doctor. After showering, however, Stevenson complained about not feeling well and his health started to deteriorate. It became clear to all there that something was wrong. The doctor was called back. He called an ambulance in which Superman passed out. Adonis was diagnosed with a brain bleed at the hospital and put into a medically induced coma so surgery could be performed to reduce the growing pressure inside his head.

Stevenson stayed in the coma until December 22nd when he woke up. Word has been pretty quiet out of Montreal, but his girlfriend has been dropping bits of information here and there on social media. Recently she let the world know that not only is Adonis awake, he has been moving his extremities and has spoken at least a little bit. These are the small steps towards recovery. Some cases of this sort of brain injury have seen the damaged fighter return to close to the person they were before. Some have not even come close. Here is to hoping Superman stays on track to returning to flight. Everything seems to have been handled as well as it could have been so far.
