#1 super middleweight Callum Smith

The WBC’s vacancy in the super middleweight division created when Badou Jack elected to move up to light heavyweight now has a date to be filled on September 9th. Callum Smith, arguably England’s current top immediate prospect, will travel stateside for the first time to meet former titlist Anthony Dirrell in Los Angeles.

Anthony Dirrell (30-1-1, 24 KOs), cancer survivor and brother of Andre Dirrell, won his title in 2014 in a two fight series against veteran Sakio Bika after the first fight ended in a draw. He lost it to the aforementioned Badou Jack in his next fight and has spent his last three bouts picking up relatively easy wins as he waited for his next shot.

Callum Smith (22-0, 17 KOs), brother of Paul, Liam, and Stephen, has long been considered the most talented Smith fighter and one of the UK’s top prospects. Having won both the British and European belts, there is little left for him to do in that scene. Here Callum is taking a giant step up in competition, but he is not going to be considered a big underdog by any means.

No venue, television, or supporting fights have been announced yet.
