Terry Flanagan’s defense against Felix Verdejo has been postponed due to injury

It appears as if the scheduled September 19th defense of Terry Flanagan’s WBO lightweight title against top Puerto Rican Felix Verdejo will need a new date. Due to a leg injury suffered by the titleholder, Top Rank has confirmed that the fight has been officially postponed.

There is no word on what exactly Terry Flanagan’s (33-0, 13 KOs) leg injury is or how long it will keep him out. Flanagan last fought in April, scoring what was a refreshingly good win over a decent contender in Petr Petrov after three previous straight defenses against notably subpar opposition. While I’d loke to see Flanagan in even deeper, especially in unification bouts, back to back defenses against Petrov and Verdejo would have been a good run too. It still will be, but we will have to wait for it now.

Felix Verdejo (23-0, 15 KOs), 24 and a 2012 Olympian, last fought in February against unknown Nicaraguan Oliver Flores as the main event of Top Rank’s recently defunct UniMás series. Once considered one of the biggest prospects in all the sport, Verdejo’s star has cooled considerably with a series of dull performances that were followed by a motorcycle accident that he did not appear to come back well from in the Flores fight. A world title win, especially a dominant or exciting one, could still wash away all the negativity of the last couple years though.
