Mayweather and McGregor are cleared to wear 8 oz gloves

One of the main story lines heading towards MayMac fight week has been the two fighters’ quest to meet with smaller gloves than what the Nevada State Athletic Commission mandates for junior middleweight. Today the commission voted to break their own rules and the fighters will have their way come fight night.

Now we know this fight will end in two rounds or less. At least it will according to Conor McGregor, anyway. It was the Irishman who began complaining about the glove size by claiming junior middleweight was chosen so Floyd would be hurt less by the division mandated 10 ounce gloves. Floyd quickly called for the smaller gloves allowed one weight division down too, however, and eventually the commission elected to allow them to have their way. McGregor has been very vocal on the record concerning how long Mayweather will be able to withstand him with 8 ounce gloves. Two rounds is his latest claim.

Ultimately, however, this is mostly much ado about nothing. Floyd Mayweather Jr has fought almost the entirety of his career with 8 ounce gloves. While I suppose if you believe that McGregor’s only chance is a small punchers chance, then this would help him a little bit in that quest. It is extremely unlikely that this will matter though. The expected issue for McGregor is not being unable to hit Floyd hard enough, Conor can punch, but being able to hit him at all. This doesn’t change that equation.

Rest easy, fight fans. Ten days to go.
