S8C Top 25 Update: A big shakeup at bantamweight

Luis Nery, Boxing
#1 bantamweight Luis Nery

Yet again, the week that was in boxing did not have a lot happening. In fact, from all the action in the world, only the bantamweight division saw any actual movement in the S8C Top 25. What movement it was, however, as we have a new number one in the division.

Luis Nery, Boxing
Your new number one bantamweight

Luis Nery is now the new bantamweight #1. I gave some thought to slotting him in third behind Zhanat Zhakiyanov and Juan Carlos Payano, but ultimately a fourth round stoppage over the clear top fighter in the division was enough for me to put him on top. At worst, he is third in the division, but I am comfortable with him as king. This is a huge jump from eleventh, but well earned. Yamanaka dropped to #4 behind the three aforementioned fighters, but really he can rank as high as second if you, like me, put Nery first. Those four can be in any order so as long as Yamanaka is behind Nery. It is a very tight division up top.

Otherwise, Yuriorkis Gamboa and Francisco Rodriguez picked up wins in their respective divisions of lightweight and flyweight where Gamboa is seventeenth and Rodriguez sixth. Neither moved in the rankings, however. Antonio Margarito also should have timed out at junior middleweight as he has been inactive for one year, but I give an exemption to fighters with an upcoming bout scheduled. He is set to fight Carson Jones on September 2nd. As long as that fight does not get canceled, Margarito will hold his spot at junior middleweight.
