S8C Top 25 Update: Indongo knocked down a few pegs by Crawford

Terence Crawford, Julius Indongo, Boxing

Internationally, this was yet another in a string of predictably slow summer weeks for the sport of boxing. We do have some movement, however, thanks almost exclusively to Bob Arum and Top Rank as fallout from their big junior welterweight unification ESPN card headlined by Terence Crawford’s three round destruction of Julius Indongo.

The Top Rank Card Fallout

While Terence Crawford’s number one position at junior welterweight of course goes unchanged, Julius Indongo’s previous grasp on number two does. I dropped Indongo to #5 behind Mikey Garcia, Rances Barthelemy, and Adrien Broner. I just don’t think he can win those fights. He remains ahead of Antonio Orozco, however. I also realized I needed to slot Mike Reed in at junior welterweight. This actually proved to be a fairly easy decision as he slotted in very naturally at #15, behind Kiryl Relikh but ahead of Anthony Yigit.

At heavyweight, Bryant Jennings broke his long hiatus and needed to be inserted back in the division. I felt he fit in quite naturally at #11, one spot behind Dillian Whyte but ahead of Eric Molina. Whyte was also in action, but his win didn’t not impact his ranking. The same can be said for sixth ranked light heavyweight Oleksandr Gvozdyk who, like Whyte, picked up a win but did not move.

Finally, I’d like to note that Mike Alvarado remains unranked. I don’t think he wins against anyone in the S8C Top 25 at welterweight. If you didn’t see that fight, Alvarado looked horrible before his KO of the year candidate of a finish.

Other Fallout

British lightweight Sean Dodd fought this weekend against a can. That in itself had no impact, but it did cause my to re-evaluate his standing overall. I had him unranked, but with his recent history win over European titleholder Francesco Patera who I had twenty third, it made sense to insert Dodd in one spot ahead of Patera.

Also, I caught that I had Cesar Juarez ranked at featherweight when he should have been ranked at super bantamweight. This has been corrected. The opening at featherweight was filled by Chris Avalos.

Finally, twenty fifth ranked junior lightweight Alberto Machado picked up a win as well, but he held still in the rankings.
