Weekly Fight Schedule (Week Ending 8/13/17)

Omar Chavez, Roberto Garcia, Boxing

As always, I include a comprehensive list of US televised shows, while trying and probably failing to do the same for the UK. I also try to include all title fights worldwide. Unfortunately, this week that is basically nothing at all. Though this one is not as void of content as some past, we are firmly in the dredges of a typical boxing-lite summer.

Omar Chavez, Roberto Garcia, Boxing
This is what we are reduced to this week.

Thursday, August 10th

Charles Huerta (19-5, 12 KOs) v TBA, super featherweights & Christian Gonzales (16-1, 14 KOs) v Daniel Perales (10-10-1, 5 KOs), lightweights – Estrella TV – LA Fight Club

This is a Golden Boy LA Fight Club show. It isn’t important, it will feel cheap if you watch it, and whether the fights are entertaining or not is set to random. I can’t find a clear time googling around, but it doesn’t matter as no one is going to watch this. It will also be available on Ring.TV though.

Saturday, August 12th

Francisco Rodriguez Jr (23-4-1, 15 KOs) v Elias Joaquino (11-0-1, 6 KOs), flyweights & Yuriorkis Gamboa (26-2, 17 KOs) v Alexis Reyes (15-2-1, 7 KOs), lightweights – Televisa, 10:30 PM Eastern

I am guessing on the weights as they are not yet listed, but here are some fights. Rodriguez is a former unified minimumweight titleholder, a rare breed indeed. He lost his title shots above that weight though. Joaquino is a Filipino with an entirely empty record who is here to lose. Everyone knows Gamboa’s story in the co-main event and it speaks to where he is in the sport now that he is the co-feature to a Televisia card. Just judging by his ledger since I have no idea who he is, Reyes is a high level club fighter, or maybe a low level journeyman. Either way, if even this diminished version of the former Cuban star struggles at all here, it is time to hang them up.

Omar Chavez (36-3-1, 24 KOs) v Roberto Garcia (40-3, 24 KOs), junior middleweights – BeIn Sports En Español (USA), TV Azteca (Mexico), 11 PM Eastern

This is a good fight between two domestic level Mexican fighters both on good runs. Chavez, Julio Cesar Chavez’s less known boxing son, is the name here and he accordingly has a following. He is a minor underdog here in my eyes, however, even though he has improved as he enters his late twenties. What this should not be is our fight of the week. Yet, it is. Thanks, August! No undercard for this fight is listed yet so it could be just a one off show.
