Results: Usyk kicks off the World Boxing Super Series with a stoppage win over Huck

Oleksandr Usyk, Marco Huck, Boxing

The World Boxing Super Series is officially under way. Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk stopped Marco Huck in the tenth round on the road today in Germany to successfully defend his WBO cruiserweight title in the first match of either tournament. It was a dominant performance.

Oleksandr Usyk (13-0, 11 KOs) controlled the fight from start to finish, but Marco Huck (40-5-1, 27 KOs) at least showed more life than he did last time out against Mairis Briedis, another titleholder and participant in the World Boxing Super Series. Before I continue I must also note that the official stream cut out and I did miss two rounds in the middle of the fight.

From what I did see, Usyk fought a very brash fight filled with theatrics. Every time Huck landed something, and he did land some in the first few rounds, Usyk would give a big smile or even on occasion pretend to be hurt. The press conference antics seemed to really get to him, but not enough to impact his performance. His constant back and forth lateral movement and stiff jab were all he needed, but he stuck a straight to the body and upstairs too.

When I got my stream back, Huck looked about physically done and he was a round later. Usyk put on a sustained assault over a period of about thirty seconds while chasing Huck around the ring before Robert Byrd intervened with under a minute to go in the tenth. It was a good stoppage.

Usyk will now move on to meet the winner of September 30th’s contest between Mairis Briedis and Mike Perez.
