According to Golden Boy president Eric Gomez, Miguel Cotto’s final fight in December is going to be against Sadam Ali on HBO. Apparently the Puerto Rican legend has thought better of the rumored middleweight showdown with David Lemieux.

It seems like we are headed to a really anticlimactic finish to Miguel Cotto’s career, unfortunately. Sadam Ali isn’t a bad fighter, but compared to Miguel Cotto he is. Ali was stopped by generally light punching Jessie Vargas last March in the only time he has really stepped up. The Brooklyn fighter is 3-0 since then, but none of those opponents as much as approached Jessie Vargas, let alone Miguel Cotto.
Again according to Eric Gomez, a laundry list of junior middleweights and welterweights all turned down the fight. Whether that is true or not, it doesn’t really matter. This disappointing fight is what we are getting either way. For a long time there was talk that Cotto would fight David Lemieux at middleweight in what would have been a pretty weird match, but that never really felt like a likely Cotto decision and it didn’t pan out.
December 2nd at Madison Square Garden is the targeted date and time. Golden Boy rarely promotes on the East Coast, but with these two it is too logical of a location.
