Miguel Berchelt out of Orlando Salido fight, Salido/Vargas II instead?

Orlando Salido, Francisco Vargas, Boxing
Salido/Vargas and Vargas/Roman were FOTY candidates, can Salido/Roman be one too?

In some really unfortunate news, Miguel Berchelt has re-aggravated an injury and will not be able to go forth with his December title defense against longtime contender and former titleholder Orlando Salido. Thankfully this poor turn of events might have a silver lining underneath. Reportedly an Orlando Salido rematch with Francisco Vargas is being looked at as a replacement.

Vargas left, Salido right

The injury Miguel Berchelt (32-1, 28 KOs) is suffering from is reportedly the same hand injury that he suffered against Takashi Miura in July. Apparently he has hurt it again in training. Maybe it never healed properly to begin with. Let’s hope this does not become a recurring issue for the supremely talented and still young Mexican titleholder.

As for the potential replacement fight, Orlando Salido (44-13-4, 31 KOs) and Francisco Vargas (23-1-2, 17 KOs) put on an absolutely epic twelve round war in January that remains a front runner for fight of the year. While great competitive fights always welcome a rematch, this one in particular is desirable because the judges scored their first fight a draw. There is little chance that this wouldn’t be another war given their styles.

Since January, Vargas went on to lose his belt to the injured Berchelt while Salido has taken and won a low level fight. Hopefully this card is salvaged by this potentially amazing rematch as it also is set to hold a vacant junior lightweight title fight between Tevin Farmer and Kenichi Ogawa.
