The WBSS marches forward

In the third World Boxing Super Series super middleweight quarterfinal, George Groves stopped Jamie Cox in four. It was a fun, high energy fight that delivered the expected result before too long. Groves now moves on to fight Chris Eubank Jr in the semifinals.

“Saint” George Groves

The first two rounds of the fight were sustained, high octane action. Jamie Cox (24-1, 13 KOs) came out hyper aggressive. He mostly just got countered in the first, but in the second frame his activity level probably carried it. To the trained eye George Groves (27-3, 20 KOs) was still landing the sharper shots, but he probably lost the round anyway.

Cox seemed to crash a bit in the third. He started clinching a lot and went to the canvas due to weak legs at one point, for example. He came out reinvigorated in the fourth, but it didn’t matter. A minute or so into the fourth, a huge right hand to the body ended the action. Jamie Cox collapsed to all fours and could not rise.

While Groves got the expected early win, Jamie Cox might have exceeded expectations on confidence and aggression alone. Maybe not though. I guess it depends on whether your expectations were grounded in reality or fantasy.

With the win, Chris Eubank Jr is waiting in the semifinals. Now that is a good fight.
