We now have the date for our first World Boxing Super Series semifinal. WBA super middleweight titleholder George Groves will meet Chris Eubank Jr in the Manchester Arena on February 17th. This is probably the most anticipated fight in either tournament thanks to the interest coming out of the UK and they definitely put it in the right place.
George Groves (27-3, 20 KOs) finally won his world title this May on his fourth try against Fedor Chudinov in a dominant stoppage performance. He then defended it in his first round World Boxing Super Series matchup with Jamie Cox. Maybe he struggled a hair more than he should have in October, but Groves still triumphed early with a fourth round finish. It took years and multiple attempts, but George Groves now sits as an indisputable top super middleweight.
Looking to knock him off his throne will be Chris Eubank Jr (26-1, 20 KOs), son of the British legend of the same name. For a while Eubank was considered a famous name and little more, but consecutive decisive wins over longtime top fighter Arthur Abraham and rising prospect Avni Yildirim have done a lot to silence that criticism. The Yildirim win was especially impressive given that Eubank, while favored, was never supposed to blow him out in three rounds like he did.
The winner of this fight will go onto the finals to fight the winner of Callum Smith and Juergen Braehmer from the opposite side of the bracket. There is no date yet for that fight, nor for either matchup in the cruiserweight semifinals.
