Over the past few days, a trio of interesting news tidbits have broken from across the Atlantic. We may be close to a satisfying opponent for Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury takes an important step towards returning, and Carl Frampton might be about to find himself in legal limbo.
- First, let’s talk about former two division titleholder Carl Frampton (24-1, 14 KOs). Recently he just had his first fight with promoter Frank Warren, a tougher than expected assignment against little respected Mexican foe Horacio Garcia. Previously Frampton had worked promotionally with Barry McGuigan’s Cyclone Promotions. It seemed like Frampton was able to leave that smaller outfit without issue, but now McGuigan has filed a breach of contract lawsuit. These sort of legal battles can really cause serious inactivity and completely bog down a fighter’s career, so hopefully this is resolved quickly.
- Controversial former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) has been talking about returning ever since his early 2016 rematch with Wladimir Klitschko fell through, but only recently has the talk seemed real. In an important step, Fury has signed with up and coming management firm MTK Global. The fact that he is interested in representation is the best indication yet of a real return that we’ve had for the headline machine himself. Next he needs to drop some real weight.
- Finally, and most excitingly, WBA/IBF unified heavyweight titleholder Anthony Joshua (20-0, 20 KOs) may actually meet WBO titleholder Joseph Parker (24-0, 18 KOs) next. Promoter Eddie Hearn has been on the record talking about how the announcement could come in the next few weeks. Apparently Parker and his team have come down in their demands and now the fight is in reach. We can only hope this goes through as it would get us one step closer to once again having an undisputed heavyweight champion.
