Miguel Cotto’s bicep was indeed torn

Miguel waving goodbye

Just as a minor note in follow up to the weekend’s coverage of Miguel Cotto’s ill fated farewell fight against new WBO junior middleweight titleholder Sadam Ali, there has been confirmation of Miguel Cotto’s bicep injury.

Miguel Cotto (41-6, 33 KOs) indicated post-fight that he had injured in the seventh round. It did not feel like an excuse at all given that his left bicep looked visibly rolled up much too high in his arm. Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya has since revealed that Cotto went to the hospital after the event and was indeed diagnosed with a torn left bicep.

If this injury was suffered in the seventh round as indicated, it definitely had a big impact on the fight. While Sadam Ali (26-1, 14 KOs) had done some really great work early too, the Puerto Rican legend had started to come on at the very end of the fifth and seemed briefly by the seventh to have ended his early struggles and taken over the contest.

It was not to be, however. Now known to be down his primary weapon that has always been a devastating left hook, Cotto faded after the seventh and was especially dominated over the later rounds. Sadam Ali deserved and received the decision. This is a sad way for an all time great like Miguel Angel Cotto to go out, but at the same time it should confirm his retirement. Not only was he 37 with a foot out the door to begin with, but now he has suffered an injury that would keep him out for a long time anyway.

We wish you well, Miguel. Thanks for the memories.
