S8C Top 25 Update: Glowacki falls in a win, Berchelt entrenches in his spot

A slow week of boxing almost as quiet as the ones we saw over the holidays has passed. A few top fighters were in action, including elite junior lightweight Miguel Berchelt, but only one fighter actually moved at all in the rankings. Polish cruiserweight Krzysztof Glowacki actually fell a couple spots despite winning.

Previously fifth ranked cruiserweight Krzysztof Glowacki picked up an eight round stay busy win at home in Poland this weekend. While he earned and deserved the victory, Glowacki was nearly shocked and finished in a fifth round in which he was dropped and badly hurt. Given that he was in against a six fight novice with no power on his record whatsoever, that isn’t necessarily a good look. I have long felt that he, Denis Lebedev, and and Tony Bellew were very tightly bunched together at five through seven in the rankings. Because they were so close, that moment of weakness was enough to slide him behind them for me.

Fellow Polish cruiserweight Krzysztof Wlodarczyk also faced a soft touch on the same card, fighting for the first time since suffering the first stoppage loss of his career at the very capable hands of Murat Gassiev. He triumphed without issue and retains his #12 ranking. Also winning without impacting his ranking was American lightweight Hank Lundy who remains at #19 following his win over former contender turned career journeyman DeMarcus Corley.

Finally, elite junior lightweight titleholder Miguel Berchelt made a soft defense of his title. While I think Berchelt is a truly excellent fighter, he remains at #2 as potential pound for pound king Vasyl Lomachenko still stands in his way for now. #9 junior lightweight Micky Roman was also active in a stay busy fight in Mexico, winning as well. These two may potentially now be on a collision course.
