Gervonta “Tank” Davis returned to form tonight in Showtime’s opener by stopping Jesus Cuellar on work both upstairs and downstairs in three rounds. We can put the doubts from his last fight to bed for now.
Gervonta Davis (20-0, 19 KOs) was pretty damn spectacular tonight in Brooklyn. Jesus Cuellar (28-3, 21 KOs) opened the fight aggressively and managed to push Tank back a bit, but a body shot midway through the first round changed the complexion of the fight. From there Cuellar backed off and Tank Davis got going. The body work reared up even bigger in the second round as a straight left to the midsection put Cuellar down for a count after being visibly hurt there previously.
The finish came in the third round. For the first time Gervonta buzzed his Argentinian foe upstairs with an uppercut. Cuellar backed to the ropes in retreat, but it didn’t work. Gervonta Davis moved in to execute him and did it efficiently with right hooks both upstairs and down. Jesus Cuellar collapsed to the canvas and the fight was stopped immediately. It was a good stoppage by referee Benji Esteves.
This was an absolutely devastating performance at a time when Gervonta Davis needed one for his reputation. The 23 year old acknowledged that he wasn’t focused in his last fight in his interview with Jim Gray too. New trainer Kevin Cunningham was credited for the return to form.
