Jaime Munguia successfully defended his junior middleweight title in GGG-Canelo 2’s co-main event.
It was apparent right out of the gate that the co-main event wasn’t going to go any longer than the two fights leading up to it. WBO junior middleweight title Jaime Munguia (31-0, 26 KOs) is a massive puncher who will have a physical size advantage over everyone in the division for as long as he can make the weight. Brandon Cook (20-2, 13 KOs) is no exception. The Canadian has shown real toughness in the past and he had to early here. He got roughed up in a big way along the ropes. I thought he was about to go down twice from body shots, but he made it out of the round.
Cook showed his toughness yet again early in the second. He came out firing. Munguia is hittable so Brandon landed with ease, but the problem is the monstrous return fire coming from the Mexican. Some body work discouraged his offense before too long. By the end of the round he was getting messed up against the ropes. He went down on a similar flurry in the third, though I will note it did look Munguia hit him again while he was down. Cook didn’t seem badly hurt and was allowed to continue. Jaime attacked with a ferocious fury to close the show on the ropes. His Canadian challenger was eating them, but the ref had no choice and did the right thing here.
Jaime Munguia is definitely a rising star to watch in 2019, if he doesn’t take another fight before the end of this year even. This was his fifth of this year already. The Mexican titleholder likes to be active.
