Walter Sequeira had little for the light heavyweight prospect.
Headlining on BT Sport locally and on ESPN+ in the United States, British light heavyweight prospect Anthony Yarde (17-0, 16 KOs) carried the weight of expectations today in Brentwood against Walter Gabriel Sequeira (21-5, 15 KOs). For the most part, he delivered. The 27 year old opened the fight in control with a solid first round. Things did go against him a little in the second, however. It was a close round in which the Argentinian did do well to get inside and expose Yarde’s inability to fight all that effectively in there with his his long arms.
Yarde reasserted himself in the third behind a stiff, pressure jab. It was pretty dominant work with right hands raining in. One to the body seemed to hurt Sequeira early in the round, but he survived to the end despite repeated heavy blows from a big puncher. It was his turn to come out and correct his performance in the fourth and he sort of did, but it didn’t matter. While the traveling fighter did well to get back to where he had some success on the inside, he was too damaged at this point and a clipping Yarde right hand dropped him. He’d get up, go down, and get up again before being put down for good.
All in all, not a lot changed here for Anthony Yarde. He still is the same impressively looking, powerful prospect with the same defensively liabilities he’s had for a while. His head is just there to hit and even a limited fighter in Walter Sequeira was able to get his slow, telegraphed work in. One thing that is coming along for the British prospect is his jab at least. He really re-established himself in the third round behind the strength of it.
Also in action in the co-main event, Johnny Garton (23-1-1, 10 KOs) scored a career best win in stopping recent world title challenger Gary Corcoran (18-3, 8 KOs) in the eleventh round of an exciting fight to claim the British welterweight regional title. This one isn’t relevant to the world scene at all, but it was a fun watch anyway while waiting for the bigger cards of the day to start.
