ESPN+ picks up Horn-Mundine

Manny Pacquiao, Jeff Horn

The streaming service will air Australia’s battle of the generations.

The upcoming domestic dust up between former top Australian draw Anthony Mundine (48-8, 28 KOs) and the new face of Aussie boxing in Jeff Horn (18-1-1, 12 KOs) has a US outlet in the form of ESPN’s $5 per month streaming service ESPN+. The fight will take place on the morning of November 30th US time at around 7 AM Eastern. You don’t need to get up, however, as the service will have the fight on demand later in the day as well if you’re interested.

I don’t actually expect anyone in America to be all that excited about it though. The fight sounds like it will do solid numbers in the casual Australian audience due to the recognizable names, but hardcore fans there and elsewhere recognize this one as the mismatch that it probably will be. Mundine is 43 and certainly past his best. Before his knockout win over a mid regional level guy in Tommy Browne in January, he hadn’t clearly won a fight since 2014 either. The former popular Rugby player also will have to drain himself down to 156 pounds for the first time in three years. The 43 year old does have the size advantage having held a 168 lb title at one point, but Horn has been a notably large welterweight on the verge of becoming a 154 lb fighter anyway.

I don’t think the size disparity is enough to make this all that competitive at this point. This is the general consensus on the fight too so I am not saying anything radical here. Jeff Horn is a solid, young fighter in his prime going in against a shot fighter in Mundine that he might have been able to be competitive with in Mundine’s prime anyway. Anthony was solid, but he never operated on any level higher than the one Horn is on now even at his peak. Still, these guys will make their money and there is a US outlet for us to watch on if we so please. It isn’t like Horn was going to take a tough fight following his first loss to Bud Crawford anyway.
