HBO is still getting out of the sport as announced last month, but they also still have a boxing budget for the remainder of 2018. The longtime home of the sport’s biggest fights also reportedly owes young Mexican junior middleweight titleholder Jaime Munguia (31-0, 26 KOs) one more fight on his contract with the network. If HBO Boxing is dead, its body is still twitching just enough to make that show potentially happen.
December 8th is the targeted date for the card. No opponent has been rumored as of yet, but the show will reportedly be a tripleheader. It’s co-main event will likely feature former top pound for pound fighter Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (47-2, 39 KOs) taking his second fight back from his knockout loss to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. The opening bout of the contest would involved pound for pound elite female fighter Cecilia Braekhus (34-0, 9 KOs) for her second fight on the network.
It does sound like this is all going to come together. Whether or not it ends up being HBO’s final card is hard to say. On one hand it comes late enough in the year to make it probable, but on the other the premium network has the right to match any offer for Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez’s fight against Rocky Fielding the very next week. There is also no reason they can’t throw together another card before the year ends. Who exactly it would feature I am not sure, but the budget still exists.
Rigamortis will have to wait for the new year to set in.
