Floyd says just kidding, he will not be fighting in Rizin

The all time great has issued a statement on the situation.

Now that retired all time great and pay per view king Floyd Mayweather Jr has returned to American shores, he has elected to dump a bucket of water all over the idea of him competing in Japan in Rizin as was announced in a press conference that he attended. I’ll let Floyd’s Instagram take it from here.

This whole thing is one strange situation. I do this with some trepidation given the vitriol many boxing fans had for this side show, but I must admit I’m kind of disappointed. Watching Floyd fight a mixed rules bout of some sort with a kickboxer twenty plus pounds lighter than him scratches the freak show matchup itch from my old days as a fan of PrideFC.

Also, this is a little confusing. Not as confusing as the idea of the fight to begin with, but one detail keeps nagging me here. The other day Floyd posted himself sitting with a pair of Rizin gloves on, also on Instagram, right before the official announcement of his fight. If he was going for a low key exhibition fight for wealthy investors that was never intended for distribution, what is the point of that post to hype the incoming announcement?

Maybe he was just intending to brag about the purse, I guess. Since none of this has made sense from minute one, I’m fine with the nonsensical conclusion though. I don’t need to think about it any longer. Confusion is the logical conclusion of Floyd Mayweather Jr being announced as fighting in a Japanese MMA promotion.
