Canelo-Jacobs is on for May 4th

Canelo Alvarez
#1 middleweight Saul "Canelo" Alvarez

DAZN has a major fight on its hands for Canelo de Mayo weekend.

Color me surprised in the best way. Golden Boy Promotions and Matchroom Boxing have come together with their mutual broadcast outlet DAZN to put together one of the very best fights that can be made in the sport. On May 4th Danny Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs) will put his IBF title on the line against Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (51-1-2, 35 KOs) and his WBA and WBC belts. Once again only the WBO title will be left out in the cold.

Both men have the major mutual opponent in longtime middleweight king Gennady Golovkin. Both men fought basically even with him, Canelo twice. Since Jacob’s early 2017 narrow defeat against GGG he has ripped off three straight wins, the last two of which came against underrated foes in Maciej Sulecki and Sergey Derevyanchenko. Canelo pulled off the narrow win in his rematch with Golovkin in September before moving up to super middleweight for a basically nothing fight with Rocky Fielding last month. That one wasn’t competitive and never could have been.

I really didn’t expect Golden Boy to go ahead with this fight for May. I thought they’d look hard at it for September, but I figured May would be for limited in house puncher David Lemieux up at super middleweight or something more along those lines. Sometimes I love being wrong. Canelo-Jacobs is an awesome fight, one of the best that can be made in boxing. I am pretty exciting for this one already.

I also was wondering what Jacobs would do with Eddie Hearn if he failed to bring in a big fight for him yet again. No need to wonder that any longer. Not only did the British power promoter deliver the most lucrative fight available, but the bout is the first in a three fight extension with Matchroom and DAZN.

The best part is that this one will only cost $9.99 for the month and come with a bunch of additional fights during that time too. DAZN may have some work to do from a production standpoint, but the price point can’t be beat for this kind of fight to say the least.
