Juan Manuel Marquez considering June 24th comeback

All time great Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) is reportedly considering a June 24th fight date in Toluca, Mexico according to his trainer Nacho Beristain. The former four division Mexican titlist and Manny Pacquiao conqueror is now 43 years old and has not fought since a May 2014 win over Mike Alvarado.

In the last couple years Marquez has consistently been rumored as a potential Miguel Cotto opponent, but they ultimately have not been able to come together on a weight for the fight. The rumored numbers have been that Cotto does not want to go below 150 while Marquez does not want to come in above 147. Otherwise Marquez has also been battling knee issues that kept him semi-retired.

Unquestionably one of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time, Marquez has held real titles in four divisions. I always kind of think of him as an honorary five division titlist too as his 2012 highlight reel knockout of Manny Pacquiao would have netted him a welterweight belt had Pacquiao not lost it in a robbery the fight before. If the judges had done their job right in Pacquiao/Bradley I, Marquez would be Mexico’s first and only five division titlist.

No opponent has been as much as rumored, but given Marquez’s by then three year layoff, age, and the lower revenue Mexican location of the potential bout, it will be a very understandable soft touch.
