Mikey Garcia and Adrien Broner set to meet on July 29th at 140 lbs

Adrien Broner, Boxing

The rumored fight has come to be. Three division titlist Mikey Garcia will indeed be fighting four division titlist Adrien Broner on July 29th. The fight will be broadcast by Showtime as 2017 just keeps delivering on quality bouts.

First and foremost, I do not believe for a second Adrien Broner (33-2, 24 KOs) is going to make junior welterweight. He has only done this once since 2014. Most recently he had to get a 142 lb catchweight fight against Adrian Granados raised to a full 147 lb welterweight bout because he wasn’t going to make weight. Broner does not take care of himself in between fights. Do not be shocked if this fight is canceled when it is clear Broner is not going to make 140, but then again Garcia’s camp must know that is the most likely outcome already anyway.

Mikey Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) is a much better fighter than Adrien Broner too, but he might be moving up just far enough where his big power is diminished. That is what happened to Broner when he hit junior welterweight. This is an interesting fight from a competitive standpoint, but with two counter punchers that prefer their opponent to lead here, I do worry about it being a good fight from an entertainment perspective. Still, 2017 is on an absolute roll and I will not complain about two top fighters like these being matched against one another.

No word on any undercard as of yet.
