All this Mayweather to the UFC talk is real, somehow

Over the past couple weeks there have been a few far fetched seeming rumors coming and going concerning retired all time great boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr having interest in fighting in the UFC. Today UFC president Dana White validated them by confirming that the two camps are negotiating.

Recently Floyd has noted on social media that he could come back at any time. This is true, of course, but he added on the following to start all this discussion:

“I can come right back. If I wanted to, I can come right back to the UFC. I can go fight in the Octagon. I can do a three- or four-fight deal in the Octagon and make a billion dollars.”

The idea of Floyd Mayweather Jr being competitive in anything but entry level mixed martial arts is even more absurd than the idea of Conor McGregor succeeding in boxing, so basically everyone dismissed the idea as Floyd being Floyd. Surprisingly, however, Dana White has confirmed that there are ongoing negotiations with the Mayweather camp about the soon to be 41 year old prize fighting legend joining the world’s biggest mixed martial arts promotion. Here is what he said:

“We’re talking to Floyd about doing a UFC deal. It’s real… We’re interested in doing something with Floyd. Everything is a realistic possibility. Mayweather vs. McGregor fucking happened. Anything is possible.”

The UFC president is of course referring to the summer blockbuster that was the top boxing draw versus the top MMA draw in a boxing match. Mayweather versus Conor McGregor sold 4.3 million pay per views and reportedly drew in over $600 million in revenue. It is no surprise that there is a level of interest in repeating that sort of windfall, but it is a surprise that that attempt to strike lightning in a bottle once again could involve Floyd Mayweather Jr in a UFC cage.

This is a strange one, folks.
