Diego De La Hoya, Oscar De La Hoya’s nephew, picked up another win last night on Golden Boy’s ESPN series over former title challenger Jose Salgado. Salgado quit after seven one sided rounds.
Diego De La Hoya (21-0, 10 KOs) controlled the fight start to finish with his aggression and hooks. Jose Salgado (36-5-2, 29 KOs) was there fighting back, especially early, but he didn’t really come close to winning a round. Round by round, young, 23 year old Diego just landed shot after shot. He is by no means the puncher his more famous uncle could be in his prime, but at this level De La Hoya lands so much volume that he can score stoppages.
The fight was shifting towards being a beating by the end of the third, but it didn’t really escalate to full mauling status until the sixth round. Salgado actually started it well with his body work, but by the last minute a combination of body work and head shots had him pretty well beaten up along the ropes. He had been running his mouth most of the fight, but by this point he was silent and firing little back. He came out for the seventh, but after another one sided round Salgado and his corner called it quits. The punishment wasn’t as bad as in the previous round but the win was obviously out of the question so there was no reason to take the beating any further.
In the opener, unbeaten junior welterweight prospect Travell Mazion (13-0, 11 KOs) picked up a nice eight round step up win over Daquan Paldo (17-2, 9 KOs), formerly known as Daquan Arnett. It was a close, competitive fight and by far a career best win for the Dallas product.
