The second fight on the GGG-Canelo 2 PPV is in the books. It was a brief one.
Limited-French Canadian power puncher David Lemieux (40-4, 35 KOs) did his thing in the first round. He came in ripping big hooks to the body, but he also showed his vulnerability. Spike O’Sullivan (28-3, 20 KOs) landed basically everything he threw back. A jab even staggered Lemieux back at one point. It was clear almost immediately that it this was going to come down to whether or not the British fringe contender could take David’s power long enough to land something of his own.
Nope. Before the first round reached its conclusion, the answer was made plain. David Lemieux turned a left hook over blind while taking a jab. Despite being hit at the same time, his landed clean on O’Sullivan’s chin and dropped him hard. Spike looked like he could get up briefly, but it quickly became clear that he had no idea where he was. His eyes were blank and the fight was appropriately stopped.
It was a pretty crazy finish. To be able to land with that sort of power despite being popped simultaneously is freakish stuff. For all his faults, and he has many, David Lemieux is an absolutely monster puncher. I’m sure he he will just end up being put back in over his head technically next against one of the top few men in the division though. He’ll probably lose looking amateurish likw he did most recently against Billy Joe Saunders, but he’ll always have a puncher’s chance at least.
