Golden Boy & Canelo Alvarez extend their promotional deal

The move seems like a no brainer for both parties.

In what seems like a bit of a foregone conclusion following Oscar De La Hoya and company at Golden Boy making Canelo Alvarez the richest athlete in the world by negotiating a record setting deal with John Skipper at DAZN, Golden Boy president Eric Gomez says the promotional outfit has extended Canelo’s deal by “like four fights.”

The strangeness of him not being able to say exactly how many fights speaks to the unfortunate nature of boxing contracts. Typically many things like winning titles or getting a certain amount of main events will trigger automatic extensions, meaning it is initially unclear how many fights the deals are initially expected to deliver. This is a big part of the reason why these arrangements often end in disputes with one side’s lawyers saying the contract is completed with the other side claiming the opposite.

Regardless, Canelo is sticking with Golden Boy long term. Why wouldn’t he? The promotional company has secured him a deal that will pay him over $70 million dollars annually for the next five years. No one in the history of sports has ever signed a deal like that, but Golden Boy got it for the Mexican superstar. It’s a minor gamble, of course, given that DAZN has no track record of success yet and Alvarez is married to it, but everyone seems happy all around for now.

Canelo’s next fight comes December 15th against Rocky Fielding. He’ll be moving up to super middleweight to test the waters there before being expected to come back down to middleweight for a bigger fight next May, potentially against Danny Jacobs should the Brooklyn fighter win his fight this upcoming weekend.
