Diego De La Hoya to fight on BeIN Sports on Nov 17th

Diego De La Hoya, Boxing

Oscar’s cousin will be back at it soon.

Super bantamweight contender Diego De La Hoya (21-0, 10 KOs), cousin of legendary five division champion and promoter Oscar De La Hoya, will return to the sport on November 17th for his first fight since dominating faded former top fighter Jose Salgado in early June. This is not meant to be a serious test, however. Rather the November fight clearly is marked as a stay busy, record building contest designed to keep the 24 year old active while Golden Boy moves into its DAZN deal beginning in 2019.

De La Hoya will be in against Venezuelan Edixon Perez (17-2, 12 KOs) in a co-promoted card in Mexico. The show will be broadcast on BeIN Sports En Espanol. Zanfer Promotions will help with the show, presumably by filling out the undercard. Perez is far from a contender having lost twice on levels far below Diego’s and will be an easy out, but the fight makes sense if Golden Boy Promotion’s current position in the sport is considered. The major American promoter has used up its dates with ESPN and their longtime big fight broadcaster HBO is not going to pick up any more shows from them either. Oscar and company have a new deal beginning on DAZN in January, but until then their roster still needs to stay active. That’s why a creative deal for an emerging contender like Diego with a major Mexican promoter like Zanfer to be aired on a channel Golden Boy never would otherwise bother with temporarily makes sense. Diego needs another fight before the end of the year and they found him one.
